The Animal Shelter is now under new management! While we do not have set hours yet, the new manager is available almost daily and is setting hours at the beginning of the week which we are trying to keep posted to this site. Most of the animals that come to the Socorro Animal Shelter are strays, meaning they have been picked-up off the streets with no identification, or left by persons in the cage outside the shelter. We typically have no history or veterinary records for most of our adoptable animals. Therefore, the Socorro Animal Shelter cannot guarantee the health or temperament of an animal. As a new owner, it is your responsibility (and we strongly encourage you) to take your pet to a veterinarian as soon as possible for an evaluation and check-up.
Adoption Deposits:
At the time of adoption, the City charges the cost of spaying/neutering your pet plus a one year rabies vaccination (approx. $12).
Costs will vary with the animal adopted and the veterinary clinic used (see below).
Canine Neuter - $90
Canine Spay - $100
Feline Neuter - $60
Feline Spay - $80
Animal in Heat or Pregnant - Additional $25-$30 More
Previously Sterilized Animals - (NO ADOPTION FEE) - $12 deposit for rabies unless records verify previous vaccination.
*When you pick your animal up from one of the local vets after sterilization, the vet office automatically deducts the deposit from your bill.
*If your animal is not sterilized or vaccinated in Socorro, you are required to provide proof of sterilization to the city and then the city refunds the deposit made on the animal.

Financial assistance to help defray the cost of spay/neuter services for your pet is available to qualifying owners through the Animal Protective Association of Socorro, APAS. Typically the animal shelter has coupons from APAS. For more information, pet owners can contact APAS through THEIR website below.
The Animal Protective Association of Socorro (APAS) is a non-profit 501(c)(3)
organization. APAS work as volunteers to help find homes for homeless animals and to reunite lost pets with their owners.
